Detailed Job Description: Equipment Technician

Our client, a respected manufacturing and engineering firm based in the heart of the ST19 region, is seeking a proactive and technically proficient Equipment Technician to join their maintenance team. This role is critical to ensuring the smooth, efficient, and safe operation of specialised production machinery and plant equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnosing faults, and carrying out repairs to minimise downtime and support continuous production targets. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on technician to work with advanced machinery in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where precision and reliability are paramount.

Applying through Quick Placement offers distinct advantages. As a specialist recruitment agency with deep roots in technical and industrial staffing, we don't just fill vacancies; we build career pathways. We understand the specific skill sets required for Equipment Technician roles in the ST19 area and have a strong relationship with this employer, ensuring your application receives direct and prompt attention. We manage all the onboarding logistics, provide clear contract terms, and offer ongoing support, making your transition into this role seamless. Whether you're seeking an immediate start to bridge a gap or a long-term career move, our team is dedicated to matching you with the right opportunity, much like we do for roles such as a Reach Truck Driver in Luton, LU1 or specialised trades through our Construction Recruitment Specialists division.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) on a range of electro-mechanical production equipment, including CNC machines, conveyor systems, and packaging machinery, following detailed maintenance schedules and checklists.
  • Promptly diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults to identify root causes of equipment failure and implement effective repair solutions.
  • Carry out reactive repairs and breakdown support to minimise production downtime, which may involve working on live systems under strict safe isolation procedures (where qualified).
  • Utilise diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and PLC interfaces to analyse equipment performance and rectify complex issues.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, parts used, and machine histories in the company's computerised maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Adhere strictly to all Health & Safety regulations, including PUWER, LOLER, and site-specific rules, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with production supervisors and other engineering staff to plan maintenance windows and provide technical advice on equipment operation and minor operator training.
  • Assist with the installation and commissioning of new equipment and participate in continuous improvement projects to enhance equipment reliability and efficiency.

Essential Skills & Requirements

  • Proven experience as an Equipment Technician, Maintenance Engineer, or Multi-Skilled Technician within a manufacturing, industrial, or FMCG environment.
  • A recognised engineering apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent) and/or relevant qualifications in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong practical skills in both mechanical fitting (bearing replacement, drive belt changes, gearbox work) and basic electrical fault-finding (3-phase motors, sensors, control circuits).
  • Familiarity with PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley) for basic fault diagnosis and an understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • A steadfast commitment to health and safety; experience working under permit-to-work systems is highly advantageous.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Full driving licence and own transport are essential due to the client's location in ST19.

Frequently Asked Questions

The client in ST19 operates a mix of CNC machining centres, automated assembly lines, and industrial ovens. While we don't expect expertise in every machine, proven experience with rotational equipment (motors, gearboxes, bearings), conveyor systems, and basic control panel fault-finding is essential. Specific training on their proprietary machinery will be provided.

The initial requirement is for a standard Monday-to-Friday daytime shift (e.g., 8 am - 4:30 pm). However, the client often requires overtime to cover breakdowns or planned maintenance shutdowns, typically paid at time-and-a-half. There may also be opportunities to move onto a continental shift pattern in the future for those interested.

The temporary period is usually 12 weeks. This allows both you and the employer to assess the fit. Performance reviews are conducted during this time, and assuming all goes well, a permanent contract is typically offered at the end of this period. Quick Placement manages this transition smoothly.

While not always mandatory, certifications greatly strengthen an application. These include IET Wiring Regulations (18th Edition), Compex, or specific safety passport schemes (like EUSR). Most importantly, a strong, demonstrable understanding of safe working practices, risk assessment, and permit-to-work systems is required. The client will provide site-specific safety inductions.
