Job Description: Emergency / Rapid Response Staff

As a leading temporary staffing specialist with deep roots in the Edinburgh market, Quick Placement partners with businesses facing urgent operational gaps, critical project surges, or unexpected staff shortages. Our Emergency / Rapid Response Staff are the frontline solution, deployed to maintain continuity, safety, and productivity across sectors including construction, facilities management, logistics, and event support.

This role is ideal for proactive, hands-on individuals who excel under pressure. You will be part of a flexible workforce, called upon to perform a variety of tasks requiring a practical mindset, physical stamina, and excellent problem-solving skills. Whether you're a skilled Groundworker, a technical CV / Audio-Visual (AV) Technician, a precise Plasterer, or a versatile labourer, your ability to adapt and deliver quality work swiftly is paramount. We ensure you are matched with assignments that suit your skills through our robust 7-step vetting process.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Rapid Deployment & Site Readiness: Respond to short-notice call-outs, arriving on-site in Edinburgh EH12 or designated locations prepared to immediately assess and undertake tasks. This can range from emergency clean-up and securing premises to assisting with urgent construction works or event setup.
  • Versatile Operational Support: Perform a wide array of manual and semi-skilled duties. This may include loading/unloading materials, basic carpentry, painting, fencing, drainage assistance, or supporting skilled trades like Plasterers and Groundworkers.
  • Safety & Compliance Adherence: Strictly follow all site-specific health & safety protocols (including RAMS), wear correct PPE, and contribute to maintaining a zero-accident culture. For relevant roles, valid CSCS, CPCS, or other certification management is essential.
  • Technical & AV Assistance: For roles requiring technical aptitude, duties may involve setting up, testing, and troubleshooting CV / Audio-Visual (AV) equipment for conferences, corporate events, or building management systems under supervision.
  • Communication & Reporting: Provide clear, concise updates to site supervisors and your Quick Placement consultant. Report any issues, near misses, or completion of tasks promptly and accurately.

Essential Requirements

  • Proven Experience & Reliability: Minimum 6 months of experience in a hands-on role within construction, warehousing, facilities, events, or a similar fast-paced industry. Impeccable timekeeping and a proven track record of reliability are non-negotiable.
  • Physical Fitness & Adaptability: Ability to perform manual labour, lift heavy objects (following safety guidelines), work in various outdoor/indoor conditions, and adapt to changing tasks throughout a shift.
  • Right to Work & Documentation: Must possess valid right-to-work in the UK documentation. For many sites, a valid CSCS card is highly advantageous. A full UK driving licence and access to transport is preferred for greater flexibility across Edinburgh.
  • Safety-First Mindset: A genuine commitment to health and safety. Ability to understand and follow risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) without compromise.
  • Communication Skills: Good verbal communication skills in English. Ability to take instruction and work effectively as part of a team or independently when required.

Frequently Asked Questions

This role is defined by its urgency and versatility. You are deployed to fill sudden staffing gaps or respond to unforeseen operational needs. Your duties are incredibly varied and depend entirely on the client's emergency. One day you could be assisting with flood damage cleanup and securing a building, the next you might be supporting a construction team that's fallen behind schedule, helping with traffic management, or setting up AV equipment for a last-minute corporate event. The core requirement is to be adaptable, physically capable, and ready to tackle practical problems head-on to ensure business continuity for our clients.

While not always mandatory for every assignment, possessing a valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card significantly increases the number of sites you can work on and your potential pay rate, especially for roles supporting Groundworkers or general construction. For technical roles like CV / Audio-Visual (AV) Technician support, relevant experience or certifications are required. If you don't have a CSCS card but are otherwise suitable, we can advise you on how to obtain one and may even have opportunities on non-CSCS sites. The most important qualifications are reliability, a strong work ethic, and a safety-conscious attitude.

Speed is our specialty. For candidates with all documentation in order (right-to-work, relevant tickets, etc.), it is possible to be placed on a shift within 24 to 48 hours of your initial application, and sometimes even the same day. This is the essence of"rapid response." The timeline depends on your immediate availability and the specific requirements of the live urgent vacancies we are filling. Our video"How We Fill Emergency Shifts in Under 2 Hours" details this process from the agency side.

While a significant portion of urgent work is in construction and facilities management—similar to the services we provide as a construction staffing agency—the need for rapid response staff spans industries. We also place staff in logistics and warehousing for urgent order fulfilment, in hospitality for last-minute event staffing, and in the public sector for emergency cover. Your adaptability opens doors to various sectors, much like the diverse roles we list on our roles we recruit page.

There is no single"typical" pattern, which is a key feature of this work. Shifts can be early morning, late evening, overnight, or standard daytime hours. They can be 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, or even longer depending on the emergency. You may be asked to work weekdays, weekends, or bank holidays. The key is flexibility. When you register, you'll discuss your availability preferences with your consultant, who will then only contact you for shifts that fit within your stated windows. This system provides great flexibility for those seeking it, similar to our temp employment opportunities nationwide.
