Job Description: Packer (Standalone) – Exeter EX1
This Packer (standalone) position is a critical role within a fast-paced, high-volume distribution centre located in the heart of Exeter's EX1 industrial estate. Our client, a respected national retailer, requires a dedicated and self-sufficient individual to manage the end-of-line packing process for a wide range of consumer products. Unlike team-based packing lines, this standalone role demands a high degree of personal accountability, initiative, and quality control. You will be the final checkpoint before goods are dispatched to stores and customers across the South West and beyond, making your attention to detail paramount.
By applying through Quick Placement, you gain access to our extensive network of local employers and our streamlined registration process. We specialise in connecting skilled Warehouse Operatives and logistics professionals with businesses that value speed and reliability. As a leading Construction Staffing Services and general recruitment provider, our expertise spans multiple sectors, ensuring we find the right fit for your skills. This particular role is ideal for someone who thrives working independently, enjoys a physical, hands-on job, and is looking for an immediate start with the potential for long-term employment.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Tasks
As the sole packer for your designated zone, you will own the entire packing process from start to finish. Your primary goal is to ensure all orders are packed accurately, securely, and efficiently, ready for shipment.
-
1
Accurate Order Fulfilment
Independently receive picking lists and assemble corresponding products. You must meticulously check item codes, quantities, and specifications against orders to achieve a 99.9% accuracy target, ensuring zero errors in the packing process.
-
2
Secure & Efficient Packing
Select appropriate packaging materials (boxes, void fill, insulation) based on product fragility and size. Employ efficient packing techniques to maximise space, minimise material waste, and guarantee all items arrive at their destination in perfect condition.
-
3
Quality Control & Labelling
Act as the final quality inspector. Visually inspect all items for damage or defects before sealing packages. Accurately generate and apply shipping labels, consignment notes, and any necessary documentation using handheld scanners and warehouse management systems (WMS).
-
4
Workstation Management
Maintain a clean, organised, and safe packing station. Proactively monitor and replenish packaging material stocks. Safely operate tape dispensers, label printers, and pallet trucks, adhering to all site health and safety protocols at all times.
-
5
Throughput & Communication
Meet and exceed daily packing targets and deadlines. Communicate effectively with warehouse supervisors and the picking team regarding stock shortages, order discrepancies, or system issues to maintain a smooth operational flow.
Essential Skills & Experience We Require
To be successful in this standalone role, you need a specific blend of practical skills and personal attributes. We are looking for proven experience, not just potential.

- Minimum 6 months of recent experience as a Packer, Warehouse Operative, or in a similar standalone logistics role.
- Demonstrable experience in a fast-paced environment meeting daily targets and deadlines without constant supervision.
- Proven ability to perform final quality checks and maintain exceptionally high standards of accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
A Packer (standalone) is a role where you work independently, managing your own packing station from start to finish. You are responsible for the entire process for the orders assigned to you: checking the picking list, gathering items, selecting packaging, packing securely, labelling, and preparing for dispatch. You are not part of a conveyor-belt style packing line; you manage your own workflow and quality control. This requires a higher level of personal responsibility, time management, and initiative than a team-based packing role.
While 6 months of direct experience is the ideal, we encourage candidates with transferable skills to apply. For example, if you have experience in other meticulous, target-driven roles (e.g., retail stockroom work, order picking, assembly work) and can demonstrate the required personal attributes—reliability, attention to detail, self-motivation—we would still consider your application. The key is to highlight these skills in your initial conversation with us. We also have other entry-level Packing Operative roles that may be more suitable as a first step into the logistics sector.
Our temp-to-perm model is designed to be a smooth trial period for both you and the employer. You initially work for Quick Placement on a temporary contract, assigned to the client site. During this period (typically 8-12 weeks), you prove your skills and fit within the team. If both you and the client are happy, there is a pre-agreed mechanism to transfer your employment directly to the client company, often with improved benefits and a permanent contract. We manage all the paperwork and ensure a seamless transition. It's a low-risk way for you to secure a permanent role. Learn more about our approach on our Temp Employment page.
Absolutely. Excelling as a Packer (standalone) demonstrates reliability, accuracy, and the ability to work under your own initiative—all qualities valued by employers. Common progression paths include: becoming a Team Leader or Supervisor overseeing other packers, moving into an inventory or stock control role, training to become a Forklift Driver (FLT) for higher pay, or moving into dispatch/logistics coordination. Quick Placement actively supports upskilling. We can provide information on local training providers for FLT licences and other certifications to help you advance, similar to pathways we support for CSCS Labourers in construction.
On your first day, wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear (steel-toe cap safety boots are often required and may be provided, but bring your own if you have them). Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing you don't mind getting dusty (e.g., trousers and a t-shirt). Avoid loose jewellery. Bring your photo ID (passport or driving licence) and your National Insurance number for final checks. A packed lunch and a water bottle are also recommended. The client will provide a full site induction covering safety procedures and issue any necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) like a hi-vis vest. Your Quick Placement consultant will confirm all specific requirements before you start.
