Job Description: Courier Driver (Sunderland SR1)
Quick Placement, a premier staffing agency connecting talent with opportunity across the UK, is recruiting experienced and dedicated Courier Drivers for a variety of clients in the Sunderland SR1 region. This is a vital logistics role, supporting local businesses, e-commerce fulfilment, and essential supply chains. We pride ourselves on offering not just a job, but a career pathway with flexibility and competitive remuneration.
Whether you're looking for an immediate start to bridge a gap, prefer flexible shifts around other commitments, or are seeking a long-term temp-to-perm opportunity, this role offers genuine versatility. Our clients range from same-day parcel services to larger distribution hubs, meaning your day-to-day responsibilities can vary, keeping the role engaging. Much like the skilled Skip Drivers and Ducting Workers we place on construction projects, reliability and a strong work ethic are the cornerstones of success in this position.
Your Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Safely and efficiently operating a company-provided or approved vehicle (vans up to 3.5T) for multi-drop deliveries across Sunderland and the North East.
- Loading, unloading, and securing parcels and goods, ensuring all items are handled with care to prevent damage, much like the precision required for Packing Operatives in warehouse settings.
- Navigating routes effectively using provided sat-nav or route-planning software, managing time to meet strict delivery windows and customer expectations.
- Providing excellent customer service during drop-offs, obtaining signatures (POD), and professionally handling any customer queries at the point of delivery.
- Completing daily vehicle checks and basic maintenance reporting, and ensuring all paperwork such as log sheets and delivery manifests are accurately completed.
- Adhering to all traffic laws and company policies, maintaining a clean driving licence and a professional demeanour as a representative of both Quick Placement and our client.
Essential Requirements & What You'll Need
- ✓ A full, valid UK driving licence with a maximum of 6 penalty points. Drivers with Cat B (car) licence are essential; Cat C1 (7.5T) is a major advantage for some roles.
- ✓ Proven experience in a multi-drop courier, delivery driver, or similar logistics role. We value a safe driving record and familiarity with the Sunderland area.
- ✓ Physical fitness and stamina to handle frequent lifting, loading, and unloading of parcels (adhering to manual handling guidelines).
- ✓ Excellent time management and organisational skills. The ability to work independently without direct supervision is crucial.
- ✓ A right-to-work in the UK. All successful candidates must pass our vetting process, which mirrors the rigor of our 7-step vetting for construction staff.

Frequently Asked Questions for Courier Drivers
In most cases, no. The majority of our clients provide the delivery vehicle (typically a 3.5T van) for your shift. You will need a full, valid UK driving licence (Category B) to operate it. There are occasional opportunities for owner-drivers with their own insured vehicles, which typically command a higher rate. This will be clearly specified in the individual job brief.
Extremely fast. If you have all your documentation ready (licence, right-to-work, NI number) and pass our swift vetting process, you could be starting a placement within 24-48 hours of application. We specialise in immediate starts to fill urgent client needs. This efficiency is why we're a preferred partner for many businesses, similar to how we supply Construction Staffing Services at short notice.
Absolutely. Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of temping. We have a variety of shift patterns: early mornings, day shifts, evenings, and weekends. You can discuss your availability with your consultant, and they will match you with suitable assignments. Whether you need part-time hours or full-time work, we can accommodate. This level of flexibility is also popular in roles like Housekeeping and Healthcare.
A temporary assignment has a fixed end date or is ongoing with no guaranteed permanency. Temp-to-perm is a trial period where you work as a temp for a client (often 12+ weeks) with the mutual understanding that if you perform well and fit the team, you will be offered a permanent contract directly with the client. Many of our drivers secure permanent roles this way. It's a low-risk way for both you and the employer to ensure it's a good fit.
This depends on the number and type of points. Most clients have a policy of accepting drivers with up to 6 penalty points on their licence, provided the offences are not for serious charges like drink driving or dangerous driving. You must declare all points honestly during application. Each case is assessed individually by our compliance team and the client's insurer. It's always best to apply and let us check, rather than assume you're ineligible.

A Day in the Life: What to Expect on the Road
Understanding the daily rhythm of a courier role helps you prepare for success. Here’s a breakdown of a typical shift, from depot to final drop, highlighting the skills and mindset that lead to top performance and potential bonuses.
Start & Vehicle Check-In
You’ll arrive at the client’s depot in SR1, check in with the site manager, and be assigned a vehicle and route sheet. The first 15 minutes are critical: conducting a thorough vehicle safety check (TYRES, FUEL, LIGHTS, OIL) and reporting any issues immediately. This proactive approach mirrors the start-of-day routines for Plant Operators on construction sites, ensuring safety and compliance from the outset.
Peak Delivery Window
You’re now deep into your multi-drop route across Sunderland. Efficiency is key—organising parcels by stop number, navigating residential and business districts, and managing customer interactions. The best drivers develop a system for quick yet careful handling, minimising vehicle idle time. This logistical prowess is as valued here as it is for Logistics Managers coordinating larger supply chains.
Returns & Administration
After completing your primary deliveries, you’ll return to the depot with any undelivered parcels (RTs), along with completed proof-of-delivery (POD) sheets. The end-of-day process involves debriefing with the dispatcher, logging any issues, and ensuring the vehicle is refuelled and ready for the next driver. Accuracy in paperwork here is as essential as it is for Admin Assistants in office roles.

The Logistics Landscape in Sunderland: Stability & Growth
Choosing a courier role in Sunderland isn't just a short-term fix; it's a step into a robust and expanding sector. The SR1 postcode and its surrounding industrial estates (like Deptford and Pallion) are hubs for e-commerce fulfilment centres, national parcel carriers, and specialist logistics firms. This diversity translates to job security and variety for drivers.
Key Local Employers We Partner With
- National Parcel Networks: Major last-mile delivery companies servicing online retail giants.
- Automotive Logistics Specialists: Sunderland's strong manufacturing base creates demand for just-in-time parts delivery.
- Medical & Pharmaceutical Couriers: Time-critical delivery of supplies to clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies.
- High-Street Retail Replenishment: Restocking city-centre stores from out-of-town distribution centres.
This variety means your experience as a Courier Driver with Quick Placement can be tailored. You might start on generic parcel delivery but express interest in temperature-controlled medical logistics, opening a more specialised—and often higher-paid—career path.
Career Progression Pathways
Demonstrating reliability and initiative can quickly lead to advancement. Many of our temporary drivers have progressed to:
- 1 Lead Driver / Mentor: Training new drivers and assisting with route planning.
- 2 Dispatcher / Transport Planner: Moving into an office-based role coordinating driver teams.
- 3 HGV Class 2 Driver: Using temporary earnings to fund HGV licence training, unlocking higher pay grades—a journey we fully support.
Success Story: From Temp Driver to Permanent Team Lead
“I signed up with Quick Placement needing work fast after a redundancy. They had me on a courier route in Sunderland within two days. The consistency of weekly pay was a lifeline. After 10 weeks, the client was so impressed they created a permanent team leader position for me. Quick Placement handled the transition seamlessly.”
Mark’s journey is not unique. We actively track and encourage temp-to-perm conversions, providing performance feedback to help you become the ideal candidate for a permanent offer. Our consultants work as your advocates, highlighting your reliability and work ethic to clients.

- ✔ Driving Licence: A clear, colour photo/scan of both the front and back.
